How to watch Netflix in Singapore.
Netflix just arrived in Singapore and is said to be available in 190 countries worldwide. While this is true, the local content is limited and much lesser as compared to the Netflix movie contents in US. Update: The number of titles in Singapore to USA is about 1 to 1o ratio. Pathetic.
In order to enjoy the full range of experience from Netflix, you need a VPN account to get access the US Netflix. Many people think that it is too technical to set up, it is not. All it takes is 2 simple steps and less than 15 minutes of your time.
Steps to watch Netflix US full titles in Singapore or Asia.
1) Sign up with a VPN provider.
For starters, HMA VPN is the cheapest reliable VPN provider so far. What a VPN basically do is to mask your country of residence so that you can register your country as US and get access to Netflix USA. Note: Torguard is also another alternative that I find easy to use, you can try it if you find issues with HMA.
How to sign up
Just go to the HMA webpage, and select your sign up option. The best value is the 12 months package which will cost only $6.55 USD per month. Note: All the options have 30 day money back guarantee.
Setting up for Netflix in Singapore
Once you sign up, you will be provided with the login details. Login normally and you will be brought to the home panel as illustrated below.
Select any USA server options and click connect. Update: You will find some server locations not working; when you face that, just simply choose other USA server location and it will work. There are many server locations to choose from and many of those will work.
When you see the following error message, choose another server location.
You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again. For more help, visit netflix.com/proxy
Other times, you might be “brought back” to the Singapore Netflix page, even though you have logged on.
Watching unlimited online movies for $7.99 USD (1 month)
For people who are keen on exploring Netflix, the best value would be to sign up for a VPN account with HMA. And then get your free trial with Netflix for a month.
Edit: After signing up, here is a post on how to quickly setup your Netflix on your tablet, smartphone or laptop.
Netflix US vs Netflix Singapore.
Netflix has officially launched in Singapore. However, in Singapore, we will have restriction of films that do no pass the censorship criteria for Singaporeans to view. So effectively, even if the monthly subscription fees are similar, we are still only getting half the package due to censorship of films and movies. In order to enjoy the full experience of the complete and latest movie titles, the VPN and US Netflix subscription is required and more worthwhile.
What are movie titles differences between Netflix US vs Netflix Singapore
Huge differences, in terms of variety, and number of titles I must say first. Netflix USA has got about 10 times more titles than Netflix Singapore, and you are paying similiar prices in both countries.
For example, when you scroll to “Dramas” Section, the newer and popular titles such as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Life as a King, Empire State, is not available. Old time classics such as Witness by Harrison Ford is also not available.
In the TV shows section, the local content sub-categories is less than half of those of US Netflix. That is how much difference in content we are talking about.

With the absense of House Of Cards, Arrested Development and Sense8, F.R.I.EN.D.S, How I Met Your Mother, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Big Bang Theory, The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, The Simpsons, South Park and many other titles, the local Netflix content is really not so interesting anymore. I mean, seriously, I can’t be watching Forest Gump in year 2016, right? (No offense to Forest Gump fans, I do enjoy that movie, 18 years ago)
Netflix vs Starhub or Singtel
Watching Netflix in Singapore, you can eliminate the high monthly fees that you pay for Starhub or Singtel, enjoy a much wider collection of movie titles and watch the movies at different devices like tablets, phone or PC. Essentially, it means pay less, watch more. But more importantly, it is much cheaper to watch movies this way as compared to subscribing to local movie packages from Starhub or Singtel.
Here is the comparison:
